METAIRIE, La. — New Orleans Saints receiver Nick Toon’s rookie season took a turn he wasn’t hoping for early in training camp when he injured his left foot.
But when the club put their fourth-round draft pick on injured reserve this past Friday, that likely was a move the receiver saw coming.
Toon is likely to have surgery to fix a lingering issue with the foot, which he injured in the first two weeks of training camp and didn’t have a real chance to get over.
In other words, this isn’t a redshirt season.
“He’s hurt,” Saints interim head coach Aaron Kromer said. “It’s the same thing. He’s just hurt.”
Though he did play in Thursday’s preseason finale against Tennessee, catching two passes, Toon already had missed nearly the entirety of camp.
He’ll likely have surgery, Kromer said, putting him under the knife for a second time because of a left foot injury.
Toon missed spring practice before his senior season at Wisconsin because of foot surgery.
