METAIRIE, La. – Saints coach Sean Payton said Sean Canfield fill get the start at quarterback Thursday night in New Orleans’ final preseason game, playing much of the game with Chase Daniel as the backup.
Drew Brees, meanwhile, is the only player Payton identified as not playing against the Titans.
But because of injuries biting into depth at certain positions, Payton said everyone on the roster must be “ready-ready.”
“What happens in this type of situation, you can’t say put your baseball hat, you’re not playing, because there are enough guys nicked up that aren’t available to play so everyone has to be ready-ready, not only in the offense and defensive snaps, but in the special teams,” Payton said.
Safety Roman Harper, left guard Carl Nicks and cornerback Tracy Porter all will see playing time, Payton said, after missing parts of training camp and seeing their practice and game snaps stunted.
Defensive end Will Smith, on the other hand, is expected to see playing time because of depth issues; the Saints released Alex Brown on Tuesday and both Cameron Jordan and Jeff Charleston missed practice Wednesday.
But by and large, Thursday’s game will look and feel a lot like past fourth games in the preseason.
“We’re going to mix some guys in there,” Payton said. “There will be some starters playing. There will be some guys playing that aren’t starters in the very beginning part of the game. A lot of guys will get a lot of playing time.”
