Practice 2/23, Day 20, Training Camp Observations

Injury Report:
DE Jimmy Wilkerson (left knee) and FB Heath Evans (left knee) both sat out the afternoon session between the Saints and Texans at New Orleans’ Metairie, La. Facility.

Both worked in the morning and rested their surgically repaired knees in the second practice.

From where the media was standing in practice behind the far end zone, it was hard to see if RB Ladell Betts practiced.

FS Usama Young (groin), FB Marcus Mailei (ankle), TE Jimmy Graham (sprained right ankle) and LB Stanley Arnoux (sprained right ankle) remained out.

The other two PUP players – S Darren Sharper (left knee) and LB Clint Ingram (left knee) – both continued to sit out practice.

Observations:
LG Carl Nicks was back with the first-team offense after being demoted to second-team offense during the morning session.

The Saints allowed Texans quarterback Matt Schaub to go 6 of 7 during the two-minute drill, including a third-and-goal four-yard touchdown to TE Joel Dreessen.

Meanwhile, the Saints’ offense stalled at the Texans’ 34-yard line in the two-minute drills.

The Texans practiced in no pads, just helmets; the Saints went in shells (the pads that sit under the shoulder pads and helmets).

Team 1 (Texans first-team O vs. Saints first-team D):
First-and-10: QB Matt Schaub runs left end
First-and-10: RB Arian Fost takes left end for 6-8 yards
First-and-10: RB Steve Slaton goes off right tackle for 2-3 yards
First-and-10: Schaub play-action pass to Dreesse for 20-plus yards. The play-action fake completely fooled the Saints’ defense.

Other – The Saints’ forced a fumble by the second-team Texans’ offense and recovered it. Meanwhile, Saints QB Chase Daniel was intercepted by Houston LB Kevin Bentley.

Two-minute drill:
(Saints O vs. Texans D)
First-and-10 @ NO 40 (1:38): Brees to WR Marques Colston for 15 yards
First-and-10 @ HOU 45: Brees throws to WR Devery Henderson, who stopped on his route and couldn’t catch up to the ball
Second-and-10 @ 45 (1:15): Brees throws to RB Reggie Bush for five yards
Third-and-five @ 40: Brees to TE Jeremy Shockey for four yards
Fourth-and-one @ 36: [NO timeout :55] Brees pump fakes, throws pass that’s knocked down by Houston DE Antonio Smith

(Texans O vs. Saints D)
First-and-10 @ HOU 40 (1:38): Schaub complete for 23 yards
First-and-10 @ NO 37: Schaub to WR David Anderson for 16 yards in front of Saints CB Tracy Porter
First-and-10 @ 21: Schaub intended for WR Kevin Walter short, flag – defensive penalty
First-and-10 @ 19: Schaub to Dreessen for eight yards
Second-and-two @ 11 [NO TO :48]: Schaub to Anderson for eight yards
First-and-goal @ 3 (:28): Schaub throws to Foster left, FS Malcolm Jenkins good read, loss of 1-yard
Second-and-goal @ 4 (:22): Schaub has tons of time, rolls to his left, throws to Dreessen, who is open in back of end zone streaking right to left in front of LB Jonathan Vilma. Houston TD.

Other: QB Patrick Ramsey was intercepted on the Saints’ second-team offense’s second play by Houston LB Darryl Sharpton. The pass was intended for TE David Thomas.

What’s next?
The Saints and Texans practice again Thursday morning at 8:30. It’s scheduled to be open to the public, weather permitting.
