NEW ORLEANS -- How far apart the Saints and quarterback Drew Brees are to agreeing to a long-term deal may be closer than recently reported.

ESPN's Ed Werder reported Tuesday that Brees and Saints resumed contract talks, but the sides were $2 million apart and other reports had the sides anywhere from $3 million to $5 million apart.

A day later and a new report on Brees-Saints contract saga has surfaced. This time Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk has news about the contract talks. Relax, it's good news, maybe.

According to Florio's report, Brees isn't asking for more than $21 million, "And the Saints are believed to be offering more than $18 million, possibly closer to $19 million than $18 million." (See Florio's story)

All of which would put the sides inside the $2 million impasse that Werder reported and far inside the $5 million gap. The question remains, however, why isn't a deal done if both sides are so close?
