Defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma will be asked by the New Orleans Saints to restructure their contracts, ESPN reported Monday morning.

The move would keep around two players many thought would be cut due to high salary cap figures. Smith, who has been with New Orleans since 2004, carries a $14.5 million cap number for 2013 and is set to make nearly $10.1 million in 2013. Vilma, meanwhile, is entering the final year of his contract and has a cap number of $8.6 million.

Both players restructured their contracts prior to the 2012 season.

New Orleans is nearly $20 million above the $121 million salary cap expected for the 2013 season. The team already restructured linebacker Curtis Lofton’s contract, changing a roster bonus to a signing bonus to lower his cap number for the future.
