METAIRIE, La. ― Saints wide receiver Marques Colston went through his first full-go session at training camp Tuesday after having offseason surgery to correct a lingering knee problem.
Colston had been on the active Physically Unable to Perform list for the first four days of training camp, going through individual drills but being held out of team activities. That wasn’t the case Tuesday when he participated when the Saints went through red zone drills.
“Physically, I feel about 100 percent,” Colston said. “It’s just a matter of getting out here and getting timing with the quarterbacks and getting back into football shape.”
Colston said he first noticed a problem in his right knee during offseason workouts. The problem persisted through minicamp and OTA’s and eventually he decided the best move would be to have the arthroscopic surgery done during July.
“I just felt like it was something that I’d rather get taken care of now than get into the season, have something go wrong and miss game time,” Colston said.
A seventh-round selection by the Saints in 2006, Colston has recorded 1,000-yard receiving seasons in three of his four years with the franchise. He led the team with 1,074 yards receiving in 2009 and his nine touchdowns were second-most behind Robert Meachem.
The fifth-year receiver has previously had microfracture surgery, but that was on his left knee. Colston only saw one doctor, who left the decision up to the receiver on whether the surgery was necessary or not.
After erring on the side of caution, it’s just a matter of getting comfortable with Drew Brees and the other quarterbacks before Colston is back to his old ways.
