METAIRIE, La. - Saints defensive back Jabari Greer has been placed on the injured reserve list after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament midway through the first quarter of New Orleans' 23-20 win over San Francisco.
He's the second defensive back to be lost this season; cornerback Patrick Robinson went on IR after tearing ligaments in his knee in Week 2.
"We’ll wait for the surgery," Coach Sean Payton said. "I know he met with the doctors yesterday. It was obviously a setback and tough for our team, tough for him. He has been playing very well."
Greer was a leader in the secondary and was tops on the team with 12 passes defensed. On Monday teammates said his presence would be missed though they described him as in good spirits despite suffering what Payton described as a significant injury.
To replace Greer, the Saints officially announced the signing of Trevin Wade, a second-year player who was with Cleveland in 2012 but was without a team this season.
"I thought he handled the drills yesterday well," Payton said. "He’s someone who has decent speed but I’d say he has very good feet. We’ll see how he gets up to speed with what we’re doing but that’ll take a little bit."
