METAIRIE, La. — Seven players, including inside linebacker Jonathan Vilma, didn’t practice Wednesday in New Orleans’ final full padded session before Friday’s second preseason game.
Vilma practiced Tuesday but had not participated in five of the six sessions prior to that.
But when asked after practice about Vilma’s status, coach Sean Payton said he wouldn’t comment on any of the players who didn’t participate Wednesday.
ESPN.com reported in the afternoon that their sources told them he was heading to Philadelphia for a second opinion for an unspecified injury.
The Saints have sent players up there in past years to fix what they term a sports hernia. Dr. William Meyers, who works there, is known as one of the top surgeons for that kind of injury.
Meanwhile, receiver Marques Colston has missed four consecutive practices after starting training camp on the physically unable to perform list with a foot issue. He practiced four consecutive days before this past Friday’s preseason game, which he didn’t play in. He hasn’t gone through any practice this week.
Receiver Courtney Roby (toe), center Eric Olsen (foot), linebacker Chris Chamberlain (undisclosed) and outside linebackers Junior Galette (left knee) and Martez Wilson (left elbow) all were out.
For the second day in a row, Wilson was dressed in a red non-contact jersey and went through walk-through. Galette, after being dressed for Tuesday’s practice, wasn’t dressed out Wednesday.
