METAIRIE, La. — Outside linebacker Martez Wilson will miss 2-4 weeks with a dislocated left elbow, Saints coach Sean Payton said Tuesday.
Additionally, inside linebacker Curtis Lofton sat out with a sore back while Tom Johnson has a hip issue, Payton said. While Lofton will be day-to-day, Johnson could miss up to a week.
Payton said Wilson will require a brace when he returns. While depth might seem like a question, Payton said Wilson’s absence will give the younger players a chance to get on the field.
“We’ve got enough numbers and it’s really just getting a chance to see these guys in team drills and one-on-one pass rush drills,” Payton said.
At the long end of the spectrum, Wilson would be out until the final week of August. That, however, would allow him to return for the first week of the regular season.
Receiver Marques Colston remains on the physically unable to perform list, though Payton said he’s “making progress.”
Jonathan Vilma, meanwhile, missed much of practice and afterwards, showed off a set of stitches across the bridge of his nose. Vilma said the cut occurred during 9-on-6 drills when Mark Ingram forced the linebacker’s helmet down onto his nose.
The rest of those who were out have been out. Receiver Jarred Fayson (dehydration) hasn’t practiced yet while linebacker Ray Shipman (hamstring) missed his second practice.
Linebacker Victor Butler (left knee) and cornerback Patrick Robinson (right knee) remain on the PUP.
