METAIRIE, La. ― It’s hard to call a player who has as fervent a Twitter following as Thomas Morstead does undervalued.
But he’s so rarely used it’s easy to forget about him.
Saints coach Sean Payton, for one, hasn’t forgotten about him.
“He’s been outstanding,” Payton called. “He’s having a Pro Bowl season. He’s an extremely good athlete. He’s tall, he has great leg strength and his consistency this year has been fantastic.”
Indeed, few kickers in the league can claim to be doing better than Morstead this season.
He’s averaging 49.7 yards on 26 punts and his 43.7 yard net average leads the NFL. His net average is 4.5 yards more than the Saints’ opponents average when playing them.
And his 37 touchbacks top the league in kickoffs.
“Each year there’s been a steady progress and there has been improvement,” Payton said. “He’s very detailed in what he does.”
His Twitter following has grown by leaps and bounds to 11,300 since he began answering nearly every tweet this summer. He polled his legion of followers for a nickname and the result was “The Leg.”
Those who follow Morstead realize he’s having his best season yet.
Here's why - His previous career high for average was 45.9 yards and his net average best is 38.4. With 37 touchbacks, he’s already 10 past his previous best of 27 in 2009.
