METAIRIE, La. – Saints coach Sean Payton said he hasn’t been notified by the NFL about whether defensive end Will Smith will be suspended for the first four games of the season or won’t be.
“They have not,” Payton said. “The likelihood is you guys will know on or before I know. They have not and I’m sure at some point we’ll all find out. But I’ve not been given any type of time table.”
There are three-plus weeks until the season opener in Green Bay on Sept. 8.
The possible suspension stems from what the league says was a violation of its banned substance policy for taking the diuretic StarCaps in 2008. The case has been mired in appeals and the courts and was finally ruled upon this offseason.
