As summer seems to get hotter and hotter and we get down to only baseball on TV, there’s only one thing to do to keep our interest – answer questions and give our thoughts about the Saints heading into training camp.
We’ll run out one question a day in a hope that we satiate your thirst until actual toe meets leather.
20. Do we see the Saints and Drew Brees finally make up and re-affirm their wedding vow
Yes, the relationship between the Saints and Drew Brees has been a bit strained this offseason. Brees has taken the NFL and the Saints to arbitration and won. The Saints are playing hard ball on contract negotiations with the record-setting quarterback.
But when push comes to shove and dawn appears on July 16, the final day a long-term contract can be hammered out, the relationship will be repaired.
Tuesday’s arbitration ruling by independent arbitrator Stephen Burbank said Brees would be considered having third-time franchise tag should the Saints have to tag him again in 2013. This both clears up and muddles things a bit.
It clears the negotiations up in that there is now a baseline to bargain with. Under the franchise tag, Brees would be set to earn nearly $16.4 million this season, rising to $23.5 under a third-time tag requiring a 44 percent raise.
On the other hand, there’s the possibility that the Saints would balk at basically guaranteeing $40 million over the first two years, preferring to take the poison pill of a high salary next year with the thought that Brees might not earn the higher money or, shudder to think, get injured.
That’s not going to happen. The Saints already are offering a beau coup amount of money to begin with. The ruling likely just gives them the final piece of information the two sides will need to figure this thing out.
It might take until the deadline, but the two sides will likely come together. Brees wants to stay in New Orleans for the long haul and the Saints would like him to be around, too. The two sides aren't way apart.
