METAIRIE, La. – Sean Payton has one bit of advice for anyone facing the Saints who might have an injury and goes on national TV.
Either hide the injury or be honest about it.
Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman injured his thumb against Chicago two weeks ago. On Thursday’s practice report, he wasn’t listed.
But Payton knew differently.
“Listen, I think when your quarterback’s on NFL Network with a splint on his thumb, normally he’s on the injury report,” Payton said. “So, I know that he was added. And more than that, it was probably a little gamesmanship. But you gotta list those guys, the same way we do.”
The Bucs went back and listed Freeman on the injury report.
Payton’s advice for Freeman in the future – “At least take the splint off before you go on NFL Network, right?”
The Saints, by the way, went back and added Zach Strief, who missed the St. Louis game with a right knee injury, to the list on Thursday.
When asked about not wearing a brace of his own on Friday, Payton jokingly said he was doubtful.
