MOBILE, Ala. — Rob Ryan stood up from his seat at the Mobile Convention Center, shook some hands and began the exodus from the building's South Hall.
His only stop, brief as it was, was only to say seven words to those reporters attempting to get his attention.
“Mum’s the word until training camp. Sorry,” the usually loquacious Ryan said.
And with that, he moseyed out of the room, along with a large contingent of Saints personnel in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl, the unofficial official start to NFL draft season.
General manager Mickey Loomis, director of player personnel Ryan Pace and director of college scouting Rick Reiprish were there representing the administration side of things while linebackers coach Joe Vitt, quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and special teams coach Greg McMahon were among those representing the coaching side.
Loomis declined to speak after the player weigh-in, expressing he would likely talk Tuesday.
Coach Sean Payton, meanwhile, wasn’t seen with the rest of the Saints delegation in Mobile.
For him, this week marks the year anniversary of his re-instatement back into the NFL from his season-long suspension. Payton was welcomed back into the NFL on Jan. 22 and two days later, he fired defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Sixteen days after that, Payton hired Ryan to run his defense, taking the unit from last in the league to No. 4 in just one season.
