The Saints and right guard Jahri Evans have restructured the All-Pro’s contract, giving the franchise salary cap room as it continues to try and free up room ahead of free agency, a league source said Friday.
The move, which converts salary to bonus, saves the Saints nearly $2 million in cap room and combined with the money saved when they did a similar thing with defensive end Will Smith, New Orleans is now around $6-7 million under the projected cap of $120 million.
New Orleans still has several big-name players set to hit the market in spite of designating quarterback Drew Brees with the exclusive rights franchise tag this past weekend.
Left guard Carl Nicks and receiver Marques Colston haven’t agreed to new contracts with the Saints and will be unrestricted free agents when the new league year begins Tuesday.
Additionally, cornerback Tracy Porter and receiver Robert Meachem will be unrestricted free agents.
