METAIRIE, La. – For the likes of Drew Brees and Jonathan Vilma, Thursday’s preseason finale against Tennessee is rather worthless. Both will spend most, if not all, of the game on the sideline, baseball cap affixed to their noggins.

But for a player like Nate Bussey, one of the Saints’ 7th-round picks this past April, the game could make his fall.

A standout contest could catapult him onto the 53-man roster.

“Very important,” Saints coach Sean Payton said about the meaning of Thursday’s game for a player like Bussey. “He’d be a great example. Nate’s going to play a lot in the base. He’s going to play a lot in the kicking game. He would be a real good example of a guy who is working to make impression not only on defense but in special teams.”

Bussey won’t be alone. Payton said four or five roster spots at the very least are open for grabs.

The final decisions could come down to special teams, he said.

“There are just a lot of scenarios that would not just involve one position group,” Payton said. “It may involve the decision as to a player on defense, a player on offense or someone that we think in the kicking game. Those are the discussions that have to take place beginning Friday all the way leading up until Saturday.”
