NEW ORLEANS – The city of New Orleans will hold a parade to honor the New Orleans Saints football team on Tuesday, February 9 at night, a city spokesperson said Thursday.

The parade will come on a night that was scheduled to be void of parades.

A city spokesperson said the parade route and time were still to be determined, but that the parade would happen ‘win or lose.’

The spokesperson also said the parade would be at night so that people could attend after work and school.

The parade will not be the only involvement by Saints players and coaches during the Carnival season.

Quarterback Drew Brees is scheduled to reign as Bacchus, one of the city’s premier superkrewes that normally chooses someone from Hollywood as its king.

Team owner Tom Benson is scheduled to ride in Endymion and head coach Sean Payton is slated for Orpheus. Other players are almost certain to be riding in other Carnival parades.

And St Aug heard it when years before that a high school team from Patterson used it while playing against a New Orleans team. And you can bet the Patterson school had heard it somewhere before that. If the NFL can claim Who Dat they can claim everything from Boooo to Yeaaaaay. This is ridiculous, some things are for everybody and not for certain ppl to get rich with.

I’ve been saying “Who Dat” since the 1970s when St. Augustine high school in New Orleans began using the chant well before Saints fans adopted it. If you want to be technical about it the term “Who Dat” is officially public domain, originating in various songs and minstrel shows in the 1800s. As for the fleur de lis, you can certainly trademark, as the NFL has, the very specific design of the New Orleans Saints but you can no more trademark the symbol itself than you can the image of a tiger as it relates to the Bengals. Although, they may be the best bet if the NFL is looking to make a little cash - go after the Bengals and the term “Who Dey?” That one you could argue is not public domain, the French symbol of the fleur de lis and the words “Who Dat” are. The NFL would absolutely lose the case, the problem is they have the infinite pockets to fight the case.
