NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints are promoting former Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin from the practice squad to the active roster to keep other teams from signing him.

They waived outside linebacker Martez Wilson to make room for him.

Griffin was solid in the preseason.

The Saints waived him but then immediately signed him to their practice squad.

By NFL rule any team can sign a player to their 53-man roster from your practice squad. You have no right of first refusal.

Yahoo! Sports is reporting the St. Louis Rams wanted to do that. The Rams lost starting quarterback Sam Bradford for the season Sunday. Their only quarterback is backup Kellen Clemens.

The move by the Saints to move Griffin up to the active roster blocks the Rams from signing him.

Martez Wilson's career in black and gold appears to be over. He had four tackles and a sack this season, but wasn't playing a lot. He had trouble earning playing time.
