METAIRIE, La. – Marques Colston missed practice for the fifth consecutive session to “rest” his right knee, telling reporters Wednesday that they still haven’t found the cause of the irritation.
“It was swelling for about one day,” said Colston, who first missed practice on Aug. 5. “Now it’s just a matter of finding the cause of the irritation and treating the cause.”
“Some of these guys that have had off-season surgeries, we are trying to be smart with,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “The swelling has gone down and we are being cautious with a month still to go.”
Colston doesn’t know if he’ll play Friday night in the Saints’ preseason opener at home against San Francisco, saying that’s up to the coaches.
“I would obviously love to be out there but that’s going to be up to them,” Colston said. “I think all the way around we’re just being smart with this thing. It’s still August and hopefully we’re playing until February.”
The sixth-year receiver has 5,097 career receiving yards for New Orleans with 40 touchdowns. He has a 13.8 yard-per-catch average.
“It’s nothing that’s new,” Colston said. “It’s just irritated. If this was September and we were getting ready for week one, I would be out there practicing.”
