METAIRIE, La. ― The Saints released linebacker Clint Ingram after the veteran spent the entirety of training camp and the first six weeks of the season on the PUP list.
Ingram, who was released and not waived, had offseason microfracture surgery on his left knee and signed with the Saints in May after Jacksonville couldn’t come to terms with the former third-round draft pick.
“We just didn’t feel like he was making the progress physically,” Head Coach Sean Payton said. “His effort in the rehab and going through this thing has been outstanding. But ultimately we just didn’t’ feel like he was making the progress we had hoped for. He’ll continue to workout and rehab on this own.
“It wasn’t because he wasn’t doing all the necessary steps tog et healthy. It ended up being longer than expected and that was that.”
And while Ingram didn’t have to pass a physical, Payton said he wouldn’t have been able to if he had had to.
The Saints took a chance on him in hopes that he could replace strongside linebacker Scott Fujita, but he couldn’t get off the PUP list to get a chance.
Payton wouldn’t rule out a return to Ingram in the future.
“Just having him around, he’s a guy we enjoyed being with and being a part of our team,” Payton said.
