NEW ORLEANS — Defensive end Will Smith and linebacker Jonathan Vilma have restructured their contracts to remain with the Saints, a league source confirmed.
By doing so, the Saints likely moved below the $123 million salary cap that began at 3 p.m. today.
The terms of their restructures weren’t released, but they were set to cost a combined $23 million before their restructures. Smith had the second-highest salary-cap number at $14.5 million while Vilma was third at $8.6.
Those two moves combined with the earlier release of linebacker Will Herring should put the Saints in position to begin working on free agency in earnest.
