NEW ORLEANS ― Christian Ponder was pulled from the Vikings’ Sunday loss to Detroit and replaced with Joe Webb.
But Wednesday, in a conference call with New Orleans media, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier made one point clear – Ponder is and will be for the foreseeable future Minnesota’s starting quarterback.
Ponder, a rookie out of Florida State, took over for Donavan McNabb in Week 6. Since then, he has thrown for 1,637 yards, 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
“He has had his ups and downs like most rookie quarterbacks that come into our league,” Frazier said. “He is battling through those things that every young quarterback goes through. Whether you are Peyton or Eli Manning – whoever it may be. Even Joe Montana.”
Frazier said it’s not the short-term he’s looking at, but how much better Ponder will make the team with this season’s experience.
“It’s an investment for our future and he is handling it pretty well,” Frazier said.
