BATON ROUGE, La. – Third-ranked LSU improved to 4-0 on the season by beating Lamar (4-1) by a score of 8-1 Tuesday night at Alex Box Stadium.
Lamar took an early lead with an unearned run in the first inning; however, the Tigers quickly answered in the second inning with a solo home run to left field from LSU second baseman JaCoby Jones. It was Jones’ second home run of the season and his second in two games.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning with an RBI double from first baseman Mason Katz.
LSU was quiet on offense until the eighth inning, when the Tigers drew six walks and scored six runs to build a big lead.
“I thought we played a good ball game tonight against a solid Lamar ball club,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “(Starting pitcher) Cody Glenn did exactly what we asked him to do and gave us five strong innings. Our relief pitching and defense were excellent again tonight, and we were finally able to pull away in the eighth inning.
Glenn provided solid work through the first five innings, allowing zero earned runs on three hits while striking out five. Hunter Devall (1-0) struck out one batter through 1.1 innings and was credited with the win.
Left-hander Chris Cotton took the mound with two outs in the eighth inning and worked the final 1.1 frames to record his second save of the season.
The Tigers committed an error in the first inning that allowed a Lamar base runner to score. However, the Tigers settled down defensively and kept Lamar batters in check.
LSU showcased its glove work again with numerous stellar plays in the field, including a diving stop from Katz at first base on a hard hit grounder in the eighth inning.
The Tigers now move ahead to a three-team series this weekend at Alex Box Stadium. LSU will host BYU and Southeastern Louisiana in Baton Rouge. The Tigers will face BYU Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on LSU Sports Radio Network affiliates (98.1 FM in Baton Rouge) and in the Geaux Zone at LSUsports.net.
