Sophomores Jeremy Schaffer and Matt Ryan had two hits each, but it was not enough as the Tulane University baseball team dropped its 2010 season opener to Boston College, 8-5, Friday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Eagles got a two-run homer by Anthony Melchionda and a solo shot by John Spatola in the first inning to claim the early lead, and added plated five more runs over the final three innings. Tulane responded with two runs in the sixth and three in the ninth, but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
BC’s Pat Dean (1-0) earned the victory after giving up two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out eight in a 7.0-inning start. Junior Conrad Flynn (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Green Wave after allowing four runs on five hits to go along with a walk and nine Ks in six-plus innings of work.
The Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Feb. 20, when they continue the Boston College Series at 1 p.m. The two teams close out the series on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
