NEW ORLEANS -- A Tulane University football player died Thursday morning in Texas from injuries sustained in a car accident, according to school officials.

Sule Osagiede, 19, was in Beaumont, Texas at the time of the accident, said Roger Dunaway, Tulane's assistant athletics director for athletic communication. Osagiede is originally from Houston, which is about an hour and a half away from Beaumont.

“It’s a sad for the Tulane community and for the Osagiede family,” Tulane head coach Bob Toledo said. “He was a vibrant and personable young man and our condolences go out to his family. We will remember him for a long, long time.”

As a true freshman for the Green Wave in 2008, Osagiede played in nine games and had seven tackles. He missed most of 2009 after a neck injury he suffered during the preseason.

“The death of Sule Osagiede is a tragedy and as a parent I cannot imagine the grief and heartache being experienced by his family,” Tulane President Scott Cowen said. “My thoughts, prayers and sympathy are with them."

Dunaway said funeral and memorial services will be announced in the future.
