NEW ORLEANS – A five-run second inning powered Southeast Missouri State to an 11-2 win over New Orleans on Sunday afternoon at Barrow Stadium.

A three-run home run by SEMO (3-0) third baseman Jason Blum provided the first three scores in the frame. Left fielder Derek Gibson followed two batters later with a two-run blast, providing the Redhawks with a 5-0 advantage.

All five early scores came off of UNO (0-3) starter Kyle Blancaneaux. On a pitch count as part of the Privateers pre-planned ‘Johnny Wholestaff’ effort for the day, Blancaneaux allowed the five runs on six hits with three walks in 1.2 innings.

SEMO added to their tally with a single run in the fifth and the seventh before adding their final four scores in the eighth.

UNO’s first score in the contest came in the bottom of the fifth. Center fielder Chaz Boyer was plated on a Zacary Hawkins double, part of a 2-for-4 effort by the Privateer first baseman.

Jonathan Coco added another run for UNO in the ninth inning with a solo blast to left field. It was the first home run of Coco’s career on the Lakefront.

Will Spitzfaden (1-0) threw a complete game for SEMO, limiting the Privateers to eight hits while throwing a complete game. Spitzfaden only needed 83 pitches to work through nine innings.

Andre Damiens was 3-for-3 to lead the hosts’ offense production. Blum had a matching 3-for-3 effort for the Redhawks while Clayton Evans picked up a hit in each of four plate appearances.

The next 13 games for UNO will come on the road, beginning on Tuesday with a 3:05 contest at top-ranked Arkansas. The Privateers will also play the Razorbacks on Wednesday with a scheduled 3:05 first pitch.
