NEW ORLEANS -- LSU pitcher Aaron Nola will receive the 2012-13 James J. Corbett Award in the men's category Saturday by the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Corbett Awards are presented annually to the top male and female amateur athletes in Louisiana, LSU baseball spokesman William Franques said. The Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Banquet planned for Saturday will recognize Nola and 25 other athletes.
“Aaron Nola is an outstanding young man and an amazing pitcher, and he certainly deserves this very prestigious award,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “He is a tremendous representative of our program and of the state of Louisiana, and all of us at LSU are extremely proud of his achievements.”
The Baton Rouge native posted a 12-1 overall mark with a 1.57 ERA walking a mere 18 hitters.
Nola ranked No. 1 in the SEC in strikeouts with 117, No. 3 in the SEC with 12 wins, No. 3 in the league with an opponent batting average of .187 and No. 4 in the league with 118.0 innings pitched.
The right-handed pitcher joined the Tigers during its run in the SEC Tournament championship and the College World Series. The Tigers ended on a 57-11 season mark.
