NEW ORLEANS – With heavy hearts, Tulane football players practiced Tuesday; it was the first workout since teammate Devon Walker was injured Saturday in a game against Tulsa.
Walker is still in a Tulsa hospital. He underwent surgery on his spine Sunday.
“We continue to hope and pray for Devon and his family. I look forward to talking and seeing him again when the time comes,“ head coach Curtis Johnson tweeted Tuesday morning.
Tulane officials said Monday that Walker has been “alert and responsive,” but athletic director Rick Dickson, who is with Walker in Tulsa, said there is no timetable for his release from St. Francis Hospital.
“Back on the field today for practice this morning and I thought it went well for the most part and we had good energy,” Johnson described the practice, although concern for Walker’s health was at the forefront.
Walker, a senior safety, suffered a “cervical spine fracture” Saturday trying to make a tackle. Tulane officials said Monday, “Doctors have said that it’s too early to draw conclusions about Devon’s progress.”
