NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University has plans for a 30,000-seat on campus stadium that will be ready for football in 2014, the school announced Thursday.

The stadium will be built on the site of the current practice field, which is located behind the baseball diamond and athletic complex.

The school announced a fundraising drive with the goal of making the football stadium a reality.

The school said the stadium would cost about $60 million and that about $40 million is expected to come from alumni groups.

The school is also seeking about $10 million to help grow the football program.

The new stadium, coupled with the recent announcement of the hiring of former Saints receivers coach Curtis Johnson as the team’s head coach seem to show a commitment to football in stark contrast to just a few years back when it appeared the school may shut the program down.
