OPINION - What do you call a loss to a two win team, at home, after having 17-point lead, with home field advantage at stake?

Among the worst losses in Saints regular season history is what you call it. At the very least it's the most crushing regular season loss the Saints have had under Sean Payton.

Let's be real; the Saints are a 10-5 team masquerading as a 13-2 team. They've used an incredibly easy schedule and taken advantage of nearly every lucky break they've gotten to craft 13 wins but right now they aren't very good.

If you want to be reassured, need to have some Who Dat Nation sunshine blown up your backside, or are dying to hear "Everything is ok the Saints are still 13-2," stop reading.

On Friday I told you the Saints were still in good shape but if they lost to Tampa I'd look for the nearest cliff to jump off.

Won't you join me? I've already jumped. The descent is pretty peaceful but it's the landing I'm worried about. I'm guessing I'll crash into the ground after watching the Saints get pounded in their playoff game.

You hear that stampeding sound? It's not Saints fans jumping off the bandwagon. It's NFC playoff teams climbing all over themselves lining up to face the Saints in the playoffs.

The problems with the Saints are so numerous I'm not even sure where to begin.

The defense is beyond a disaster.

Tampa Bay had 400 yards of offense. They ran for 175 yards and averaged five yards a pop.

Josh Freeman, like every other QB the Saints face lately, looked awesome.

We knew the Saints defense was bad when they were behind but now they can't even look good with a 17-point lead.

Gregg Williams seems to have decided to not blitz as much since the secondary was hit with injuries and the strategy is EPIC FAIL.

I'd rather the Saints just say,"We blitz, it's what we do." If it doesn't work so be it. I know the Saints have played good defense being aggressive. I've seen them do it.

The Saints should go back to what worked even with a banged up secondary. It can't be any worse than what they've been doing the last month.

If you want to say injuries are the problem, you are delusional. Scott Shanle and Jabari Greer returning aren't likely to fix this defense. If they do, then they are Lawrence Taylor and Deion Sanders, and I'll admit I was completely wrong.

As much fun as this defense has been creating turnovers, I think the 2006 defense the Saints had when they went to the NFC Championship was better.

That unit was ranked in the top 15 and wasn't getting steamrolled in December.

On offense, the Saints scored 17 points when Drew Brees only had five incompletions and no interceptions.

Huh?

Sean Payton seemed to ease off the accelerator in the third quarter. Maybe the Saints relaxed or Tampa turned into the 2002 Bucs defense.

Who knows? What I do know is the Saints aren't winning any game scoring 17 points, especially a playoff game.

The special teams are also a major concern. They stunk against Detroit in the season opener and they stunk Sunday against Tampa.

The Saints also need a kicker. Garrett Hartley folded like a cheap suit under the pressure of a game-winning 37-yard kick.

What do you think he'll do in the playoffs facing the same situation?

If you have any other suggestions I'm willing to listen. Morten Andersen? Why not? Desperate times call for desperate measures.

The Saints picked the wrong time to have the wheels come off.

Maybe the Bears can give the Saints a late Christmas gift and beat the Vikings so the Saints won't have to beat a red hot Carolina team to get the #1 seed in the NFC.

Then again, for the Saints to do anything in the playoffs they are going to have to save themselves.

You don't get to the Super Bowl with charity from other teams, you get to the Super Bowl by winning.

Right now the Saints are a long way from doing that in the playoffs.

I wish I could close my eyes and still dream Super Bowl but reality is the Saints appear to be in the middle of capping their greatest regular season with their most epic collapse.

I'm not abandoning ship but as Sugar Ray Robinson once said, "The ship be sinking."

At least we'll all go down together.

Just as advertised, an "EMPTY HOT AIR BALLOON HOAX"

Agreed Ralph. Anyone who truly follows NFL football should have seen this coming a mile away. The defense is atrocious and has been for quite awhile now. You cannot win in December or January without playing at least some form of solid defense. I've said it all year, that the Saints would have to score 35 points to have a reasonable chance to win games. They were, and now they're not. The defense was never really a top notch defense. Things bounced their way ,and most thought they were better than they really were. Never have i been comfortable this year with the Saints defense on the field, not even early on. Without some form of divine intervention such as the Colts defense had in 06, we are one and done in the post season. Also, what cost the Saints yesterday and no one is talking about is Meachem on 2 occasions not driving his route deep enough to pick up 2 critical first downs. One before half, cost us 3 points, and the other right before the punt return, which cost us the game.

I can maybe understand the defense being banged up and not playing well, but what does that have to do with the offense not performing like they have all season? I'm a Saints fan for life, but there is some major concern going into the playoffs with the way they have played lately, and I'm not just talking about the two losses we had recently.

Yesterday's game was a metaphor for the entire season. Get off to a fast start, the offense looked unstoppable and the defense created turnovers. However, down the stretch, the offense couldn't convert when it absolutely had to, the defense was exposed and special teams were just as awful as they have been all year. As I told my friends at the game yesterday "this season is headed for a very disappointing end". If Josh Freeman were an accurate quarterback we would not have gotten the Sharper int and we probably would not have been up by 17. Jabari Greer and Scott Shanle are not going to save this defense. I agree with Ralph, I'd rather go down in flames blitizing than have a team just chew us up and spit us out because we can't get off the field on third down.

Saint's doesn't belong in playoff after their lost to a team that only won 2 games.

I kind of have to agree, even though Ralphie, is jumping off the cliff. The complete lack of effort and intensity, when there is everything to play for (home filed) is what really, really scares me. Well, after everybody rested on Saturday, maybe they can show some effort in the last game. And what's the deal with the receivers not going deep enough on the curl routes to get first downs? That happened like, 3-4 times and caused them to punt away. That's just a lack of concentration, effort and execution.

whodoyouthink/saintshater/dantisaint/301yeswecan/ I knew you would be back. You NEED this. You have gone through three or four names now because you've been kicked off so many times, and still you have the obsessive need to find a way back. That's the sign of a really mentally unhealthy person. And, you know what, that makes you a much, much, much bigger loser than the saints will ever be. Any person who feels the need to devote so much time and energy, week in and week out to go to another teams website to try to annoy their fans, clearly has an mentally unhealthy obsession. I am willing to bet a lot of money that you have few, if any friends. You don't bother me dantisaint, never have, never will. I amost feel sorry for you. A normal, healthy person does not do what you clearly have a NEED to do. You should seek professional help, but I'm sure you won't.

You might not want to read this but yes...injuries are sucking the steam right out of the Saints. Oh how we miss when we don't have...Shockey...Moore...Greer. These three guys play a HUGE part in what the Saints would like to do. Allbeit...there's NO WAY the Bucs should win this game...especially in that fashion. Yes the defense looked awful again between the 20's...but they only allowed 13 points. Against Dallas 24 points. We have the #1 offense in the league! That is who the Saints are...OFFENSE! Not defense or special teams or a strong kicking team. WE SCORE! You will need to SCORE to beat us! That's the Saints game plan going into every game. Look at the scores the beginning of the season...45, 48, 38 and so on. That's what's NOT happening now and that's why you see all the holes in the defense ever since the Detroit game. This is not rocket science! It's pretty darn simple.

The best quote applicable to the Saints loss to the Bucs yesterday is from Giants defensive lineman Justin Tuck in response to his team's loss to the Panthers yesterday: “It’s tough,” Tuck said after a seventh loss in 10 games. “We had everything at stake playing a team that was only playing for pride, and I guess pride won today. We should have been playing with a little pride ourselves.”

Great Article and ON THE MONEY. I totally agree with, "Gregg Williams seems to have decided to not blitz as much since the secondary was hit with injuries and the strategy is EPIC FAIL." The defense, playing with the lead and the BUCS BACKED UP AT THEIR FRIGGIN TWO YARD LINE, did not Blitz when there was a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR A SAFETY. Had they done it and got the meager 2 points, it would have SEALED the win. Instead, the Bucs drive it DOWN OUR THROATS 98 yards and get right back in the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just awful. I have to sadly agree with everything you said, and I have to agree about Hartley too. An NFL kicker CANNOT EVER CHOKE under pressure, and that is what Hartley did. One more thing .... I am with you in that I am STILL A FAN, but the SHIP IS DEFINITELY SINKING.

The biggest problem that this team faces and probably CAN'T be overcome at this late stage is the kicking game. This kid may have a bazooka hanging from his hip but he misfires at game time. This team definitely cannot trust him the next 6 weeks. You can say all u want about what happened yesterday but the fact is, if he hits that field goal, which he should have, none of this matters and we are all dancing in the streets again.

reaganadams said on December 28, 2009 at 12:10 PM

mjguillo, great comments. Thank you. Ralph, I am BRACING MYSELF for the Carolina game. I am practicing getting in the ready fetal position.

crochunter said on December 28, 2009 at 12:36 PM

Ralph, you nailed it. The Saints are the team everyone wants to play in the playoffs. Does anyone truly believe they stand a chance against Carolina next week? Tonight is the only chance for the #1 seed. Does it really matter though, homefield advantage that is? They could have wrapped up home field with a single victory at home the past 2 weeks and they choked. Mora era choking at its finest. Oh, what a season it was and now this?? we've been had. God gave us the Patriots game and now he hates us again.

rlwmmw said on December 28, 2009 at 12:41 PM

I would really like to see better tackling. It seems that DB would rather dive at someone with their shoulder than wrap them up. Most of the yards we gave up were from poor tackling all season. We also left too many 1st downs on the field yesterday. I think there were six passes caught near the 1st down marker that didn't quite get it done. One word...Disappointing!

bjamesboss said on December 28, 2009 at 1:04 PM

Here's a different take... After digesting the Saints loss to the Bucs, I think it is the BEST thing that's happened all year, here's why: The Dallas loss was understandable. Dallas was fighting for its life, was due for a big win and is a good team. A TB win would have put all that behind the Saints and everyone would have thought that team was back on track and the Dallas loss was just a bad game. The Saints would have clinched HFA and gone into Carolina with nothing to play for and probably would have lost. And the flaws that need to be fixed, which can be fixed, would not have stood out. The TB loss was not an understandable loss, but an embarrassment...and I think that's what this team needed. Now, either two things will happen: they will fold and be 1 and done.. Or they will get angry and inspired to take it out on the rest of their opponents and they will play like the Saints that beat NE...if that happens, they will win the Superbowl. They control their destiny!

Here comes negative, but I have been a fan since day one. I have suffered through Bill Kilmer throwing and catching his own passes, the two 20-17 losses to Atlanta, the Russell Erxleben OT loss debacle, the Oakland Raiders monday night collapse with Stabler, the Cowboys loss when Stabler was with the Saints and was sacked by Hollywood Henderson at the end, the Miracle finish game against the Jags and then miss the extra point, The big loss to Minnesota in our first playoff game after a 9-game winning streak, the year we had Fourcade and the best defense that ever played. . . need I go on? I thought, for once, this was to be our year. If not now, when? Sadly, like Urban Meyer, I have to turn in my fleur-de-lis badge, I am done. My health simply won't permit me to go on any further. If only one time we could have won it all, I would rest easy and take things in perspective, but even the Falcons have been to the SB. For this to end the way it is, is a cruel joke. God help us all.
