NEW ORLEANS – John Curtis’ string of state football championships ended at five straight Friday night in an 18-13 loss to Evangel at the Superdome in the 2A state final.
Curtis was trying to win its 24th state title. The Patriots had beaten Evangel in the state finals in 2008 and in the state semifinals in 2007.
It is the 12th state title for Evangel as the two schools have dominated championships in Louisiana football for the past two decades.
Curtis jumped out to a 7-0 lead by scoring on the game’s first play on an 80-yard run. Evangel cut it to 7-6 at the half, scoring late and having the extra point blocked. Curtis knocked down five Evangel kicks on the evening.
Evangel scored twice more in the second half to go up 18-7, before Curtis added one more score.
David Dee Duron was named the game's MVP as he completed 25 passes for 273 yards and two scores.
"My dad used to say, 'the sun's going to rise tomorrow,'" said Curtis coach J.T. Curtis following the loss. "It was what we thought it would be. I couldn't ask our guys to compete harder than they did."
