A new wrinkle has arisen in the Drew Brees contract saga -- particularly whether Drew Brees' franchise tag in San Diego counts in regards to  the one, a $16.4 million franchise tag, he has yet to sign with New Orleans Saints.

A story by Jason Cole in Yahoo! Sports explores this angle and how it could impact the numbers both sides are seeking in the Drew Brees contract talks.

"[I]f the union is correct in its CBA interpretation and 2013 would count as the third time Brees has been franchised, his cap number would be $23.574 million. Under the terms of the CBA, a player who is franchised three times gets at least a 44 percent increase in his salary," writes Cole.
