Henderson: Keep an eye on Miami tight end on Draft Day

There seems to be less fervor from fans surrounding this year’s Saints draft, despite the fact that the team is a legitimate championship contender – the reason: with such a low drafting position, you can’t really target a small handful of players as ‘the guy’ the team will pursue as you could last year when they picked second overall. Last year the talk was about Bush or Leinart (at least until they picked up Drew Brees), or an offensive or defensive lineman.

This is the longest the Saints fans will ever have had to wait on Draft Day to find out the team’s first selection.
And, the fans don’t perceive any glaring needs…still…
Don’t book on a corner early
Since the Saints have now addressed corner with the signing of Jason David and since they've tied up defensive end Charles Grant, I feel that unless one of their top rated corners falls – and that isn’t expected to happen – I would be surprised if they go for a corner in the first round. Right now, I think they’ll look at defensive tackle, wide receiver or maybe tight end.
Who’ll be there when they pick?
Some names to look for would be defensive tackle Justin Harrell of Tennessee, wide receiver Robert Meachum of Tennessee or Tight End Greg Olsen of Miami.
If one of a host of speedy receivers falls to the Saints they might be tempted to look at Tedd Ginn Jr. of Ohio State, Dwayne Jarrett of USC or Dwayne Bowe of LSU.
Hard to pass on
If Miami tight end Greg Olsen is available, I think the Saints would have a hard time passing on him. Olsen could be taken by Carolina, but at 14, that’s a bit high for his rating.
Olsen is rated between 15-25 by most services and could fall to the Saints.
Olsen would be intriguing because: He has more size than free agent tight end pickup Eric Johnson, he has better potential as a blocker, he is a coach’s son with a good attitude, and his stock really rose at the combine. Add to that Miami’s reputation for developing pro tight ends.
Considering that Johnson has only a one-year deal, considering how much Drew Brees likes to access his tight end, considering how much he went to the tight end late last year even with Ernie Conwell injured and the other tight ends not being considered high powered options, it seems that Olsen would make an intriguing fit.
With speed at receiver and explosive runners in the backfield, a top flight tight end could really have a big year in this offense.
