BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana High School Athletic Association says the Warren Easton girls basketball team must forfeit 23 victories this season because of an ineligible player.
The ruling, issued Sunday, will cost the Class 4A squad a first place finish in their district, a punishment that LHSAA executive director Kenny Henderson says could have been avoided if the school had reported its violation earlier.
Instead, another school reported the matter, and the LHSAA was not made aware of the potential violation until last week.
Warren Easton will be fined $600 for the violation and the cost of the investigation and placed on disciplinary probation for a year. The player, whom the LHSAA did not name, also is ineligible for a year.
