SA UNDER-20 SQUAD FOR INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT
South African under-20 soccer coach Solly Luvhengo on Sunday announced his 25-member squad to play in the 8-Nations International tournament in Cape Town from May 25.
The players are already in camp and will travel to Cape Town on Monday.
On Saturday, the squad played a practice match against Vosloo Aces at the Sinaba Stadium, where South Africa won 6-0.
Luvhengo said his team was hungry for success and they had impressed him with their determination and commitment.
"We don't want to put them under pressure, but as hosts I believe we need to come out with a medal in the end," Luvhengo said.
South Africa is in Group A alongside Argentina, Nigeria and Ghana.
Group B comprises Brazil, Cameroon, Kenya and Japan.
"This is a very important tournament and we need to give a very good showing because we are the hosts," Luvhengo added.
"It's been a long time since we last played a match but I believe my players will have enough in their reserves not to disappoint.
"The first match is very crucial as it is the one that will give us direction and help us settle. A win will give us the confidence to tackle the entire tournament."
South Africa faces Argentina on Friday in their tournament opener at the Athlone Stadium.
The second match is against Ghana at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday, followed by an encounter with Nigeria on Tuesday May 29 at the Cape Town Stadium.
The semi-finals will be played at the Athlone Stadium on Friday, June 1, with the third place play-off and the final scheduled for Cape Town Stadium on Sunday, June 3.
