OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Randall Mackey is at the top of Mississippi's running back depth chart. First-year coach Hugh Freeze doesn't mind admitting that gives him a little extra joy, saying the 5-foot-11, 195-pound senior is "one of my favorite kids on the team." Mackey's ascension is one of the feel-good stories during preseason camp as the Rebels prepare to face Central Arkansas on Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU head coach Les Miles says it's unclear if running back Michael Ford or linebacker Taj Jones will play in LSU's season opener against North Texas this Saturday night. Miles says the pair are appealing unspecified academic rulings that could keep them out of the game.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The Saints have trimmed 15 players from their pre-season roster, including veteran reserve quarterback Luke McCown and defensive tackle Remi Ayodele. Other cuts announced Monday include receiver Marques Clark, who was brought in for a tryout after quarterback Drew Brees liked what he saw from the little known former Henderson State player during offseason workouts.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have changed their practice schedule and travel plans with Tropical Storm Isaac heading for the Gulf Coast. Interim coach Joe Vitt canceled practice and meetings on Monday to allow players to evacuate their families.
