NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL says it's made a new contract offer to the players in an attempt to end the lockout and save the season. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly says in a statement yesterday that a "comprehensive" proposal was made a day earlier and he's waiting for a response. He adds the league is "hopeful" that once the union and its negotiating committee review the proposal "they will share it with the players."
NEW YORK (AP) — Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed has been fined $55,000 by the NFL for his high hit on the New York Giants' Victor Cruz last weekend. Reed struck the wide receiver in the head and neck area, and was penalized for the hit in the game. Carolina quarterback Cam Newton was fined $21,000 for abusive conduct toward a game official, and another $10,000 for kicking Oakland's Tommy Kelly after a play was over last weekend.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte expects to start tomorrow against the Lions despite an ankle injury suffered last week. Forte went through a full practice today and was listed probable for the game at Detroit, which the Bears will need to win to have any shot at making the playoffs.
