METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have hired Rob Ryan to coordinate their defense. That's the same position he held with the Dallas Cowboys the past two seasons before getting fired. The Saints yielded 7,042 yards last season, the worst single-season total in NFL history.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The top two teams in the NHL's Atlantic Division are sharing the ice in Newark this afternoon. The New Jersey Devils entered their game against Pittsburgh just one point behind the first-place Penguins and tied with Boston for second place in the Eastern Conference race.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Denver Nuggets own the current longest winning streak in the NBA and will be chasing a ninth straight victory tonight at Cleveland. Detroit ended San Antonio's 11-game winning streak last night.

RIMINI, Italy (AP) — The U.S. and Italy are tied 1-1 in their best-of-five Fed Cup meeting. Italy's Sara Errani (ehr-RAH'-nee) blitzed Jamie Hampton 6-2, 6-1. American Varvara Lepchenko pulled off a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Roberta Vinci.

SCHLADMING, Austria (AP) — Norwegian veteran Aksel Lund Svindal won the men's downhill at the world championships by nearly a-half second today in Austria. Andrew Weibrecht was the top American finisher, in 22nd place.
