JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Manager Mike Matheny (muh-THEE'-nee) and general manager John Mozeliak (MOHZ'-lee-ak) have been rewarded by the St. Louis Cardinals. Matheny has had his club option for 2014 picked up, while Mozeliak has had his contract extended by three years.

PHOENIX (AP) — Closer Grant Balfour of the Athletics faces arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. The A's say he will miss between four and six weeks. The 35-year-old went 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA and 24 saves last season for the AL West champions.

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — South African Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius (pihs-TOHR'-ee-uhs), nicknamed Blade Runner because of his high-tech artificial legs, has been charged with murdering his girlfriend. The incident took place early this morning at his home. A court hearing is set for Friday.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Miami and Oklahoma City, the final two teams in the NBA last season, are squaring off against one another tonight. The Heat beat the Thunder to win the championship last season and won the first game of their season-series this season back on Christmas Day in Miami. The Heat and Thunder remain two of the top clubs in the NBA this season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The first round of the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles is under way and the early clubhouse leader is Matt Kuchar (KOO'-chur). He opened with a 7-under-64 today, good for a two-shot lead over Brandt Jobe (johb).
