NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Anthony Davis outreached Kevin Garnett and Jeff Green for a last-second tip-in, and the New Orleans Hornets snapped a four-game skid with an 87-86 victory over the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night. Davis was playing despite missing the morning shootaround with an illness, and finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Jonathan Mills scored 16 points and Southern Miss beat Charleston Southern 78-71 Wednesday in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. Southern Miss led for nearly the entire game, but struggled to put Charleston Southern away until the final minute, when Rashard McGill hit an 18-foot jumper and two free throws.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Badgers are in the NCAA tournament for the 15th consecutive year and are preparing for a Friday game against Mississippi. The Badgers are No. 5 seed and senior Jared Berggren says the team has found success sticking to its defensive principles.

PHOENIX (AP) — Sean Payton is trying to guard against anyone within the New Orleans Saints' organization subscribing to the notion that the team will return to its playoff form of recent seasons just because he's back. Payton, who took part in NFC coaches' media availability at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix on Wednesday, says the Saints did a lot of things that prevented them from winning last season.
