OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Mississippi State took the lead on Wes Rea's two-run double in the eighth inning, closer Jonathan Holder turned back two Oregon State threats, and the Bulldogs beat the Beavers 5-4 on Saturday in the opening game of the College World Series. The Bulldogs advanced to a Monday game against Indiana or Louisville.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Pro Stock points leader Mike Edwards topped qualifying Saturday in his bid for a fifth straight NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals victory. Edwards took the top spot at Bristol Dragway with his Friday run of 6.632 seconds at a track-record 208.23 mph. The Chevy Camaro driver will face JR Carr in the first round Sunday. Spencer Massey led the Top Fuel lineup, and Del Worsham topped the Funny Car order.

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Points leader Regan Smith won the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, holding off Kyle Larson in the final 10 laps. It was Smith's second win of the year and 11th top-10 finish in 13 starts. Smith's final margin of victory was 0.331 seconds. He also won at Talladega in May.

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) — Roger Penske says none of his employees were poached by other NASCAR teams despite what driver Brad Keselowski believes. Penske says the defending Sprint Cup champion had "misinformation" when he accused Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing of luring away Penske employees in an effort to steal information.
