METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Saints coach Sean Payton says veteran linebacker Jonathan Vilma has traveled to Philadelphia to have arthroscopic knee surgery. Payton is not offering any timeline for Vilma's return, saying only that the linebacker is expected back and that the Saints would "kind of go from there."

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Dennis Allen didn't get a chance to match wits against his former boss when New Orleans visited Oakland last season. Sean Payton's season-long bounty suspension wiped that opportunity out, so Allen will have to settle for a preseason date on Friday night against the coach and franchise he helped win a Super Bowl in the 2009 season.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State's LaDarius Perkins has waited a long time to become the Bulldogs' starting running back, stuck for three years behind standouts Anthony Dixon and Vick Ballard. But the fifth-year senior finally got his chance last season, and responded with 1,024 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Now he's ready to cement his legacy as one of the school's best running backs.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Chris Stroud and Ross Fisher each shot 6-under 64 on Thursday to share the first-round lead in the Wyndham Championship. Eight players — defending champion Sergio Garcia, Matt Jones, Robert Garrigus, Jordan Spieth, Trevor Immelman, Morgan Hoffman, Patrick Reed and Andrew Svoboda — shot 65.
