ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have hit fewer home runs without suspended All-Star slugger Nelson Cruz in their lineup. The AL West leaders are 12-3 without him. Texas is a season-high 21 games over .500 with a 2½ -game division lead on Oakland.

CANYON, Texas (AP) — West Texas A&M has relieved head football coach Don Carthel of his duties. Carthell was its winningest coach. Athletic director Michael McBroom says Carthel violated rules against providing an NCAA investigation with false or misleading information.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Former Arkansas football coach and longtime athletic director Frank Boyles is being inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame. The first SWC class since 1995 includes an inductee from each of the nine schools that made up the SWC. The SWC Hall of Fame is housed at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — University of Texas regents have approved a 5-year contract for new Texas men's and women's track coach Mario Sategna. They also gave volleyball coach Jerritt Elliott an extension. Sategna's contract pays him about $242,000 annually plus incentives. He was hired to lead both teams after women's coach Bev Kearney was forced to resign in January.
