INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Indiana University basketball player Devan Dumes is on trial facing attempted murder charges in an Indianapolis courtroom.

The trial began Monday with his defense attorney saying the 25-year-old Dumes was defending himself when he shot a drug dealer who wanted him to deliver cocaine in order to pay off a $225 debt.

Dumes is charged with shooting Keith Jones in January. The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/183HeMp ) Jones spent about two weeks in intensive care from the neck wound and testified Monday that Dumes shot him while stealing his 2011 Chevrolet Camaro.

Dumes played two seasons at Indiana, leading the team in scoring as a junior for the 2008-09 season with 12 points a game.
