The Sharks fell one game shy of tying the best start in their history. Tyler Kennedy, Matthew Nieto and Patrick Marleau scored for San Jose. Antti Niemi made 28 saves.
ATLANTA (AP) — Aron Baynes sank a floater in the lane with 3 seconds remaining to lift the San Antonio Spurs to a 106-104 preseason win over the Atlanta Hawks last night. The Hawks trailed by 14 before rallying in the fourth quarter. San Antonio returns 12 players from the team that lost to Miami in the NBA Finals.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nolan Ryan is retiring from the Texas Rangers as CEO 20 years after ending his Hall of Fame career as a pitcher. Ryan says the move closes a chapter of his life in baseball. He feels it's time to move on to other things. Rangers co-chairman Ray Davis says the ownership group is disappointed with Ryan's decision but understands it.
HOUSTON (AP) — UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos will meet for the final fight in their heavyweight trilogy tomorrow night in UFC 166. Velasquez reclaimed the belt from Dos Santos with a decisive unanimous decision in UFC 155 in December. Dos Santos took the title from Velasquez in the first meeting in November 2011 with a knockout in 64 seconds.
