LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville says coach Charlie Strong has informed Cardinals athletic director Tom Jurich that he is leaving for Texas. The 53-year-old Strong, who was 37-15 with the Cardinals in four seasons, including 3-1 in bowl games, will replace a retiring Mack Brown.
HOUSTON (AP) — Wade Phillips was fired as the Houston Texans' defensive coordinator yesterday, a day after Bill O'Brien was hired as the team's head coach. The 66-year-old Phillips was the interim head coach for the final three games of the season after Gary Kubiak was fired and also directed the team for a game after Kubiak had a mini-stroke November 3rd at halftime against Indianapolis. Houston lost its last 14 games to finish an NFL-worst 2-14.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Tiago Splitter had a season-high 22 points before he was hurt, Tim Duncan added 19 points and 11 rebounds, and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Los Angeles Clippers 116-92 last night in their first game without injured All-Star Chris Paul. Tony Parker had 17 points, Manu Ginobili added 15 points and Kawhi Leonard had 10 points for San Antonio.
DALLAS (AP) — Jimmy Howard made 44 saves and Henrik Zetterberg scored two goals, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 victory over the Dallas Stars last night. Dallas (20-14-7) outshot the Red Wings 45-27, but went 0 for 7 on the power play at the American Airlines Center.
