DENVER (AP) — Carmelo Anthony pulled down a career-best 18 rebounds to go with his 26 points in leading the Denver Nuggets past the New Orleans Hornets 93-to-80 last night. Despite allowing a late run, it was another in a long line of fine performances by the Nuggets while the team awaits the return of defensive stalwart Kenyon Martin.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker and former Mississippi star Patrick Willis has undergone surgery on his right knee to remove an inflamed fluid sac that kept him out of this year's Pro Bowl. The 49ers said the surgery, considered minor and done about a week ago, was performed by Doctor Tim McAdams and Dr. Gary Fanton at Stanford Hospitals and Clinics in nearby Redwood City.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees says he's been offered a number of book contracts but turned them all down -- until this year. He said yesterday that he'd always thought that it was too early to write about himself, though he might do so after his playing days were over.
