ALKMAAR, Netherlands (AP) — Former United States midfielder Earnie Stewart has been appointed technical director at former Dutch champion AZ Alkmaar.
The 41-year-old who made 101 appearances for the United States moved to Alkmaar from NAC Breda, where he held the same position.
Stewart formerly was a player with Dutch clubs VVV Venlo, Willem II Tilburg and NAC as well as playing for DC United in America.
Alkmaar won the top Dutch league, the Eredivisie, in 2009 for the first time in nearly 30 years under coach Louis van Gaal.
The club was bailed out this week by a group of Alkmaar business leaders after its previous owner, the DSB bank, collapsed last year.
