Jim's Chat: Why David isn't impressive, why Shockey is and when Devery Henderson will get cut

01:42 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Michael Willis: With Deuce's recent knee scare are the Saints going to bring any veteran running backs in for a tryout?

Henderson: From what I understand, they contacted Lamont Jordan about coming in for a visit when the Raiders released him. I'm sure they have a ready list of players available. If they do bring anybody in for tryouts, we wouldn't be made aware of that. But it would sound logical to me.

gbannis1: I keep hearing Ellis is close to signing. Any concrete timetable?

Henderson: I already went out on a limb 24 hours ago saying he'd sign and he hasn't yet. I won't author another one under those circumstances. I thought he'd be in by now.

Gerald LaBarrere: Jim, I saw your piece on our running backs.  What do you think about Pierre Thomas? Do you give him a shot at being our full-time running back?

Henderson: How should I put this? I think if Pierre Thomas were the No. 1 running back, it would reflect desperation rather than design. To me you've got Thomas, Stecker, Bush - they're all a bit undersized to be a No. 1 running back. Plus, that would take Thomas away from the kick return game, in all likelihood. He was the No. 1 return guy last year when he finally got a chance to play.

nick: Any injuries during the morning practice

Bradley (Moderator): No injuries in the morning practice. But Bobby McCray was limited because of back spasms.

Henderson: Well, if health isn't an issue, Mike McKenzie is your No. 1 corner. Then I think the other corner is wide open amongst Jason DAvis, who continues to be less than impressive at this point, I think. Randall Gay, who has been a journeyman to this point. Usama Young, who had a less than stellar rookie season, though that was due to a leg injury. One of those three will end up the starter...

Bradley (Moderator): ...opposite McKenzie. Aaron Glenn figures in the mix somehow, maybe as a nickle or dime back, especially since he considers Bill Parcells his longtime mentor. Sean likes anything Parcells.

Zero468: We hear of all the standouts at training camp, who has been the biggest disappointment?

Henderson: Sedrick Ellis. He's not here.

Gerald LaBarrere: Jim, wanted to see if there is any concern over Marques

Henderson: I wouldn't think there is. He's looked excellent. He has made some terrific plays the past few days. He's easily the best receiver on the field. I don't think there's any concern with him at all.

KYLE NORTON: JIM HOW MUCH IS THIS HURTING ELLIS NOT BEING THERE YOU CAN TELL COACH IS GETTING MAD   ARE THEY EVEN CLOSE TO SIGNING HIM

Henderson: As far as signing, who knows. I think it's probably hurting him more from a conditioning standpoint as far as injury than it is the mental standpoint. As I would assume with my limited knowledge of the game that there couldn't be a deep playbook at defensive tackle.

Jeremy: Hey Jim:  Do you think the reason Rick Mueller was let go was due to having so many "developmental" draft picks last year as opposed to immediate impact players, as well as ineffective free agents?

Henderson: I think Rick thinks he was let go because of a contract he negotiated prior to 2006 that called for greatly increased incentives for the  Saints succeeding, i.e. winning the division and getting to the conference championship game. When those kicked in, I understand it nearly doubled his previous contract and perhaps became too expensive for the Saints to retain him given recent...

Bradley (Moderator): ...marginal success in the draft.

Roll_Harper_Roll: Jim who do you think will ultimately end up being our starting free safety and do you see anyone challenging Roman for the starting strong position?

Henderson: I think Roman has the strong position all to himself. I would like to see Kevin Kaesviharn to be the starting safety. I think he should have been more time last year given Josh Bullocks' struggles.

clint: Any work on Porter and Devery's injuries?

Bradley (Moderator): No word yet. They were doing rehab exercises on the sideline this morning during practice.

Kila Chi: what is it about Jason David that you don't find impressive?  You stated the other day that he was being more aggressive and that is something to see as a positive

Henderson: He always seems to have somebody running past him with the ball in their hands. He just doesn't seem to have man-for-man skills. He just seems to give too much cushion in man coverage.

DeuceFan: Will the Center position be a concern with Goodwin and Lehr at the helm? What's your take on the position?

Henderson: I think it's a concern. Jeff Faine played really well two years ago. Last year, the injury bug caught up with him a little bit. Goodwin got some playing time. Faine has had problems with injuries in his career. He was fully healthh in 2006. He missed playing time last year. The Saints felt given his history of injury and the incredible salary Tampa was paying him, he wasn't worth ...

Bradley (Moderator): ..he wasn't worth the exhorbitant salary at a position the Saints don't think is worth that kind of money.

flyinbayou: Are we going to keep both place kickers?  Will it be a platooning scenario, using one for kickoffs and one for FGs?

Henderson: No, we will not keep two placekickers. There will be one placekicker at the end of training camp. It will be Mehlhaff's job unless he performs poorly in preseason.

Danchrism: Jason Craft wasn't mentioned. Is he pretty much a 30+ year old camp body?

Henderson: I'd have to say at this point in his career yes.

Jethro: Jim:

Henderson: Jethro

clint: How much fault is that of Ellis though? I blame the agents for all of these rookie holdouts. It's getting to be a little ridiculous

Henderson: I agree.

Colston 4 President: Any word on the financial details of Colston's new contract?

Bradley (Moderator): No word. Haven't heard at all.
