Forecast: Saints need to get mad

10:39 AM CDT on Friday, October 5, 2007

Ralph Malbrough / "The Forecast"

The Saints need to get mad, angry, ticked, maybe even throw something.

AJ Mast / Associated Press

If the Saints don't get mad soon, then their fans will.

Drew Brees can feel free to go Bobby Hebert on Devery Henderson if Henderson drops another pass.

Is it just me or are the Saints way too calm about their complete ineptness?

The whole, “We’re ok. This is too good of a team and we know what we are capable of and we aren’t going to panic” line was tired after 0-2.

It’s as annoying as Emmit Smith on Sunday Countdown at 0-3.

Hey Reggie Bush, have you read and heard all the stuff said about you the last two weeks? If you haven’t, here's a recap of the national media: you’re a bust, a failure, and quite possibly the worst number two pick since Ryan Leaf. Oh, and everyone thinks your attempt to be an every down back will be a bigger failure than Carrot Top’s movie career.

The Saints have lost that emotion they had last year. The whole, “playing for the city of New Orleans” fuel is gone.

It was a one time magical boost and to think it would carry over to this season would have been foolish.

Last year was the perfect storm of good breaks, good fortune and good play. In 2007, the Saints haven’t once had that same spark they had last year.

Of course, it’s hard to have emotion and get the crowd in a frenzy when the Saints are getting pounded every week.

In three games I can honestly say I’ve only been excited twice: during Jason David’s interception return against the Colts and his interception against the Titans.

Jason David has the Saints' two biggest plays of 2007: not good. This Sunday the Saints get one final chance to try and salvage 2007.

1-3 in the NFC would still have them in critical condition. At 0-4 we can ask the doctor to state time of death.

As Kanye West says, “Now that that don’t kill me can only make me stronger. I need you to hurry up now cause I can’t wait much longer.” Ah, sweet, sweet Kanye, always there for me with a crafty tune of inspiration.

Time has run out for the Saints. It’s time to get mad or get buried.

Onto this week’s games.

Last week: 3-2

Season: 10-10

Carolina (+3) at New Orleans: This line stunned me. I expected a pick’em, but I guess Vegas bookies have not yet accepted the Saints are bad. In theory, this game sets up well for the Saints. David Carr is a sack waiting to happen, the Panthers pass rush stinks, and their secondary is getting lit up.

Until the Saints show me something resembling their 2006 form, I’m picking against them. Throw in injuries to Scott Fujita, David Patten, and Olinda Mare, and victory seems like a pipe dream. Steve Smith will end any hopes the Saints had in 2007 for the playoffs. Panthers 24-20

Kansas City (+2.5) vs. Jacksonville: The Chiefs have pulled themselves together and I’m not ready to believe in David Garrard on the road. Say hello to the first place Chiefs? 2007 is beyond words. Chiefs 19-17

Denver (-1) vs. San Diego: Will Chargers GM A. J. Smith have the courage to try and fix the Norv Turner train wreck before the end of the season? Maybe Marty Schottenheimer overachieves with teams he coaches and the playoff failures have less to do with him and more to do with the players. Broncos 27-13

Tampa Bay (+10) vs. Indianapolis: Tampa won’t have Cadillac Williams or their left tackle but I’ll still take the 10 points and because the Bucs will keep it close. Colts 28-24

St. Louis (+3.5) vs. Arizona: The Rams are injured and poorly coached, but I just have this sinking feeling the Saints will be the last team to get a win. Rams 31-17

Bonus College Pick

Florida (+9) vs. LSU: The Tigers looked like they spent too much time on Bourbon Street before last week’s game against Tulane. I think The Tigers pound on Tim Tebow and survive a close call. My real question with LSU is can they win on the road when they aren’t playing well. To win a national title they’ll need to grind out ugly road wins. LSU 25-17
